We evaluated the characteristics and trends of dissolved radionuclide behavior in the ocean using statistical analysis based on the simulation results. The surface meridional current at the release point in the Fukushima coastal ocean and the Kuroshio Extension significantly affected the north-south transport of the surface radionuclide in the Fukushima coastal ocean and the eastward transport of the offshore surface radionuclide, respectively. Because the surface kinetic energy in the coastal to the offshore area was larger, the range of the dispersed surface radionuclide tended to be larger. In summer (July-September), the increased frequency radionuclide entrainment by the Kuroshio Extension because of the surface southward radionuclide transport in the Fukushima coastal ocean and the large surface kinetic energy caused a large dispersed surface radionuclide. In winter (January-March), the decreased frequency radionuclide entrainment by the Kuroshio Extension because of the surface northward radionuclide transport in the Fukushima coastal ocean and the small surface kinetic energy caused a small dispersed surface radionuclide.

Results indicate that both I/I and C distinctly increase from 1950s. The C increase can be ascribed to atmospheric nuclear tests, while the I/I increase is due to nuclear-fuel reprocessing as well as atmospheric nuclear tests. These results are in good agreement with previous studies, indicating that the I/I measurement by JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV has been further developed.

Simulations extended over two years and both direct releases into the ocean and deposition of atmospheric releases on the ocean surface were considered. Dispersion models included an embedded biological uptake model (BUM). Three types of BUMs were used: equilibrium, dynamic and allometric. Model results were compared with Cs measurements in water, sediment and biota. A reasonable agreement in model/model and model/data comparisons was obtained.

The C and N values in the sinking particles showed a clear seasonal variation, which agreed well with the variation in the chlorophyll a concentration in the surface seawater and in the sinking flux of biogenic particles. In particular, during the highly productive season of phytoplankton, a remarkable isotopic fractionation of N was found in the sinking particles, and it was inferred that the fractionation indicates the degree of nitrogen uptake by diatoms in the surface layer. These results are helpful information for linking the phenomenon in the ocean surface and the isotopic information recorded in the seafloor.

At stations around the water depth of 100 m, relatively higher Cs activities were observed from surface sedimentary layer (0-3 cm). In these stations, sediments had high content of silt to clay particles and organic matter. The high Cs activities in the surface sediments were attributed to accumulation of highly mobile sediment particles. In October 2014, at some coastal stations, sharp peaks of Cs activities were observed in the subsurface (5-16 cm) sediments, whereas such broad peaks were not found in October 2015. These results suggest that the Cs activities in sediment had largely changed by lateral transport and re-sedimentation on the surface, as well as sediment mixing in the middle-layers.

As a result, about 60% of the total Cs was extracted. In addition, a surface soil sample collected from Kawamata Town (Fukushima) two months after the Fukushima accident, was leached for 223 days with a natural seawater, a 1:1 mixture of ultrapure water and seawater, and ultrapure water. Eventually, more than 15% of the total Cs in the surface soil sample was efficiently desorbed by seawater leaching. In comparison, about 9% of the total Cs was leached with 1:1 diluted seawater and less than 1% of the total Cs was leached with ultrapure water over the 223 days. Overall, Cs and Cs showed similar leaching behaviour.

It is estimated that about 70% of radiocesium released to the environment by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident was carried to the ocean. In addition to monitoring surveys by the government, oceanographic research by many institutions has revealed the distribution and behavior of the accident-derived radiocesium in the ocean. Numerical simulations are efficiently used in such oceanographic investigations, and further improvements are being made based on findings newly obtained after the accident. In this paper, we review the abundance and behavior of radiocesium in the coastal area of Fukushima, deepen the scientific understanding of the current situation of environmental restoration, and explain the issues to be addressed in the future.

Regarding the radiocesium concentration in seabed sediment, from May 2011, monitoring survey is continuing mainly in the coastal areas of Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures. However, due to its heterogeneity, the difficulty of observation, etc., the assessment of the influence of the accident-derived radionuclides on seabed sediments and the benthic ecosystem is delayed compared to other environmental investigations. As the Guest Editors, the authors set up a special section in "Journal of Oceanography", including four papers arguing about factors affecting the temporal change of the radiocesium concentrations in estuarine, coastal and offshore sediments. This preface shows the planning intention of the special issue, and also outlines the contents.

As a whole, Cs concentrations in seawater were higher in the vicinity of the FDNPP, and were negatively correlated with potential density. From these results, it can be considered that river water discharge or export of seawater from the FDNPP's harbor has affected the higher activity levels of Cs in seawater. It was also observed that the Cs-elevated seawater can be advected to the 2050 m depths.

The laboratory simulation tests which could be reproduced the corrosion reactions propagating in the actual environments were utilized to analyze the mechanism of corrosion phenomena. In this report, some results are introduced in the cases of maritime structures and nuclear facilities. Experimental apparatus was originally designed to obtain the data in high radioactive condition simulating actual plants. One is a result showing the effect of Np ion to the corrosion of stainless steel in nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Corrosion mechanism was revealed that Np ion is reduced to Np ion by a corrosion reaction of stainless steel and then re-oxidized to Np ion in the bulk solution. And repetition of this cycle accelerated corrosion of stainless steel by a little amounts of Np addition in nitric acid solution. Another result is introduced that an effect of HO created by radiolysis of cooling water at high radioactive environment in light water reactor.

The Tritiated Water Task Force under METI's Committee on Countermeasures for Contaminated Water Treatment for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F) reported that the option of post-dilution offshore release could dispose the tritiated water at a smallest cost in the shortest amount of time. The amount of tritium in the contaminated water at 1F was compared with ones released from nuclear power plants and reprocessing plants as some help for grasping its level of magnitude.

Results show a high fraction of lithogenic material, suggesting a lateral source of sediments. The accident-derived radiocesium were enhanced in flux peaks that, given variations in trap Cs/Pb ratios, are characteristic of material derived from shelf and slope sediments found from 120 to 500 m. The fluxes of radiocesium are an order of magnitude higher than a previously reported for the trap located 100 km due east of FDNPP. We attribute the large difference due to the position of our trap under the southeasterly currents that carry contaminated waters and resuspended sediments in to the Pacific. These higher sedimentary fluxes of radiocesium to the offshore are still small relative to the inventory of radiocesium currently buried nearshore.

Sinking flux of Cs decreased over time with seasonal fluctuation. The Cs fluxes were mainly affected by two principal modes. One was a rapid sinking of radiocesium-bound particles (moderate mode). This mode was dominant especially in the early post-accident stage, and was presumed to establish the distribution of radiocesium in the offshore seabed. Another was the secondary transport of particles attributed to turbulence near the seabed and was observed in winter (turbulence mode). Although the latter process would not drastically change the distribution of sedimentary radiocesium, attention should be paid as this key process redistributing the accident-derived radiocesium may cumulatively affect the long-term distribution.

In order to review an operator's "Decommissioning Plan" applied to the regulatory body for approval accurately and quickly, Public Dose Assessment Code for Decommissioning of Nuclear Reactors (DecDose) was developed. It evaluates public exposure doses for each year during dismantling activities in accordance with the "Decommissioning Plan". DecDose takes account of various exposure pathways such as cloudshine, surface ground deposition, ingestion of seafood, and direct and skyshine radiation based on the quantity of radionuclides discharged to the environment, and containers stored in the facility in consideration of cutting and storage of components and structures. Example evaluations with DecDose have shown that it is a useful tool for assessing public dose during decommissioning of nuclear reactors.

Braid adsorbent having functional group of amidoxime is a promising material for the recovery of uranium dissolved in the seawater. This braid adsorbent was made by polyethylene multi-fibers in which amidoxime groups were introduced by radiation-induced graft polymerization and subsequent chemical treatment. Reaction time for graft polymerization was 5 h and the resulted braid adsorbent had 2.8 mmol/g-adsorbent of amidoxime group. The braid adsorbent obtained was moored at the offing of Okinawa Island. The adsorption of uranium reached 1.5g/kg-adsorbent for 30 d soaking. The mooring system for braid adsorbent has possibility which reduced the cost for the recovery of uranium from seawater. It is shown that 134 km of mooring area is needed for annual product of 1200 tons of uranium. In addition, there is 6000 km and more of suitable sea area for the collection of the uranium in the regions from Okinawa Islands to Tosa Bay in Japan.

Development of the recovery technology of uranium of storing all over seawater can stable supply of mineral resources over the future. The amidoxime adsorbents used by nonwoven fiber of the shape of cloth produced by the radiation graft polymerization technique. It became clear that their adsorbents of the high form of contact efficiency with seawater are important. Therefore, the braid adsorbents by which contact efficiency with seawater is improved were devised. Moreover, by the mooring system using braid adsorbents, since it counted upon lightweight-ization, i.e., rationalization of the marine structure which occupies the great portion of total cost, in this research, while developing the producing method, performance evaluation was performed, and the production method and the applicability of a recovery system were examined.
